Atlanta to Daytona: Harley-Davidson

What an adventure. Nearly 1000 miles, 2000+ pictures, and 100+ drinks later I checked off one of my more memorable photography assignments. Did I mention I love my job? This is practically part 2 of my previous blog post, but this time I get to follow the guys down to Daytona Beach, FL for Bike Week. This was a big project involving RIDES Magazine and Harley-Davidson. For 3 days and 2 nights we followed around 8 Atlanta Harley-Davidson riders, and documented their experience during Daytona Bike Week. The most nerve-racking thing was piloting a big GMC Acadia SUV through Daytona Beach with literally 1000’s of rough looking bikers… I did NOT want to piss them off. I’m a skinny wanna-be pro cyclist that hasn’t done any (real) prison time, so I’m kind of lacking in the bad-ass department. BIG thanks to Andrew Link, Michael Crenshaw, and the rest of the RIDES Magazine crew for the opportunity.

Atlanta Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Iron Elite

A friend at RIDES Magazine hit me up and asked if I was interested in shooting a Harley-Davidson motorcycle club from Atlanta, GA. Going into the shoot, I had no idea what was going to happen. All I knew is I had to sneak in as many pictures as I could behind the video crew’s back for two days, so RIDES and Harley-Davidson will have plenty of options for their Iron Elite series.

Through a series of fortunate events, I have now climbed to a position of contributing to Excellence magazine, the most widely read independent Porsche magazine in the world. Very excited to say the least. There’s something that makes me tingle when I see my pictures printed in a nice magazine in a well designed layout (thanks John). Let’s also not forget Paul Krasusky who provided the words, very entertaining read… I suddenly have the urge to wear a fancy pinstrip suit with Piloti shoes and Cartier sunglasses.

“So… did your mailers work?”

I’ve noticed a trend among the tip-top commercial photographers… minus a handful (Joey L, Nick Saglimbeni, Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias), most have a polished straight-laced persona that is unwavering no matter how big a gig they get, or what awards/feature they’re offered. Will I get jaded after I land my 50th job with Reebok or Atlantic Records? Hopefully I can tell you one day, but the answer to that will most certainly be HELL NO! Back to the question in the title, maybe this will answer the quizzing inquisitors; I’m featured in this months PDN magazine!!! (can you sense the excitement?!?) No, this doesn’t mean I instantly got 20 jobs the next day from the mailers, but YES I got a lot of replies from them, and that builds a solid bridge to future jobs.

Mini feature: Advanced Photoshop Magazine

After my first feature in Advanced Photoshop Magazine I was on cloud 9… is it possible to go any higher? Clint, welcome to cloud 9 and a half. I was asked by editor Adam Smith to submit a picture and a few words on how I use Photoshop to create effects and final edits at the end of my projects. Of course I responded right away. The top 40 tips are actually very useful to read, I highly recommend any Photoshop nerd to pick up this issue.

I had to pinch myself till I bled. Is Adam Smith, Senior Staff Writer for Advanced Photoshop magazine emailing me for a feature in their magazine?!? I instantly google’d his name and email address to verify if this was real, and sure enough it was! Let me try to put this in perspective… This is THE magazine I genuinely gladly pay $15 to take home and read. Oversized pages, spot-uv covers, high quality paper stock.. so nice I’ve never thrown away a single issue. Dare I say the only magazine I buy? (American publishers can learn a thing or two from Imagine Publishing.)
