BMW Performance Center 3-day shoot

Right across the street from BMW’s largest plant in the world, is a little slice of paradise dubbed the BMW Performance Center. From setting the longest drift record (51.278 miles) in an M5, riding a motorcycle over 30′ tall gravel hills, to leaning an X5 43° on an off-road obstacle course, this 134-acre facility is any car enthusiasts dream come true.

Little known fact:
The fast-growing Spartanburg/Greenville region of South Carolina is home to the impressive BMW Manufacturing Plant. Every BMW X3, X5, X6 or Z3 you have seen has been proudly built in Spartanburg, SC… Which is PERFECT for me because I (obviously) love shooting cars. How convenient is that?

STA-BIL 360 photoshoot

Chicago is on my top list of cities to visit. I’ve been there for a wedding, a week-long vacation, and last year to celebrate the 2012 New Year!.. but this time I’m armed with a camera, my hand-selected crew (Linhbergh and Jeremy Cliff), and a few lights for STA-BIL and their new product 360 Protection.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. National Guard Edits

I’m not ALWAYS behind the camera. Sometimes I help move some lights around and edit other photographer’s photos. I’m definitely not above photo assisting. It’s a great way to pick up new techniques, and free food! My superstar friend Douglas Sonders got the call to shoot Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his #88 NASCAR for the National Guard up the road in Charlotte, NC. Besides the obvious benefit of getting to meet Dale Jr., I jumped at the opportunity to help Douglas with the studio shoot. Quantity was the keyword of the day, and we got a BOAT LOAD of diverse images of Dale, his #88 NASCAR, and various soldiers representing the National Guard. The beauty of shooting in a studio is it’s a controlled environment with the ability to knock out many angles in a short amount of time. The Phase One IQ140 camera and ProFoto lights got very little rest from 7am till 7pm as you can see from the behind-the-scenes video:

“Do you shoot Canon or Nikon” is usually the first question I get after I tell someone I’m a photographer. I’ve been holding a Canon since I was 14. The main reason is because my dad had some old Canon lenses that (I thought) looked expensive, that’s it. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentex, whatever the camera, if you rely on the camera to do all your work you’re gonna have a bad day. They are all very nice and capable cameras. Granted I’d rather work with a camera made in 2013 compared to 2003, but still when images are compared side by side it’s arguably tough to tell what image was taken with a Canon, Nikon, etc. This is why the phrase “Wow! Your camera takes nice photos” makes photographers cringe. Case in point, here’s a video of Douglas Sonders rocking a cheap camera.

2014 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet

Back to Charlotte, NC to shoot yet another GMP Performance car fresh out of the shop doors. This time it is a brand new 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet on a set of HRE P43SC wheels. All of that is fancy talk for “sleekest car in the neighborhood”… and Charlotte has a pretty high standard of neighborhoods. Very excited to add HRE Wheels to my list of clients, with many more shoots to come.

2013 Elite Track Nationals: Rahsaan Bahati

Just 2hrs up the road from me is the Giordana Velodrome. A brand new facility in Rock Hill, SC that hosted the 2013 Elite Mass Start Track Nationals. This is a scene you have to see to believe. Dozens of men and women with quad muscles the size of mobile homes on fixed gear bikes flying around a concrete 250m track inches away from each other at speeds up to 42mph. It’s about as close to a modern day gladiator coliseum you’re going to get.

RIDES Magazine 10th Anniv. Cover

Shortly after I posted my previous story about my “different” photoshoot with some DONK cars, I got another call from Andrew Link to shoot the cover for the upcoming 10th Anniversary RIDES Magazine! Different be damned, give me that cover! In a nutshell RIDES covers everything from 1200hp celebrity cars to 32″ wheel’d street culture. One thing for certain is the laundry list of photographers for RIDES are some of the best in the business. For example in this issue alone, the lineup is: Jeff Creech, Jeremy Cliff, Anthony Anderson, and William “The Beard” Stern. Sharing a magazine with them makes shooting the cover that much sweeter.

DONK Magazine: Well this is different

How about a little variety sprinkled into my blog? When Photo Director Andrew Link from RIDES Magazine gives me a call, that’s ultimately what I expect. The last time it was for Harley-Davidson, this time it is for 1973 Chevy Caprice from Orangeburg, SC that cranks out 675 horsepower, combined with a 300-shot of nitrous oxide… did I mention the wheels are 28 inches? Like I said, I never know what call I’m going to get next.

Panorama Magazine: Old Flame 914

It’s a little hard to follow my previous act (now at a staggering 935 likes, THANKS!!!), but alas the show must go on! This month I’m proud to have my work featured in another issue of Panorama Magazine, the official magazine of the Porsche Club of America. I’ll go off on a small tangent and gush about how bold and gorgeous the cover is. Of all the magazines I’ve been published, this cover may take the cake for most daring. No words, small subject, and a blue title atop a blue image are all big risks. If magazines had balls, this automotive issue would have 3..pairs. Panorama is able to push the limits a little more since they aren’t in direct competition with newsstand magazines, which is why I love working with them so much.
