Once a year, I send out personalized promotional mailers to current and prospective clients. The first time I gave it a go, back in 2010, they were an instant hit with not only the recipients, but within the photography community as well. Adding a personal touch such as a hand-written note, and piecing together a unique package raises more eyebrows than a basic 5×7″ postcard to say the least. Considering many of the people I do business with are extremely busy and surrounded by some of the most creative and innovative people in the world, this is my trojan horse.
Honestly I never know what I’m going to build until it randomly hits me one day, and snowballs from there. This year I thought I’d get a little playful with LEGOs. Surprisingly, the individual LEGO boxes were only $3 each, making this promo budget friendly. Other small personal touches include the rubber stamps, LEGO-isque Fold Factory 5×7″ fold-out print, custom-cut foam inserts for the LEGO figures, a hand-written note inside, and a unique LEGO figure for each recipient… where I try to match the person’s personality to the LEGO figure. Oh yea, and when you open the actual LEGO box, I had carefully cut open the box, inserted 3 more Cadillac prints, and glued it back to appear untouched. That’s something that may not be figured out at first, but later when they actually open the box and play with the LEGOs.
Catch up on my past mailers:
2010 – Give me a shot disposable camera
2014 – Pelican case + painted bullet casing
2015 – Prop it Up and Plan clipboard
2016 – Simple 5×5″ folded cards inside distressed envelopes
2017 – Take a LEGO break
This is actually fun for me, even more so when I get emails back saying how much they enjoy the eye-opening promo! I try to incorporate a keepsake within each year’s promo, and I think the 3-in-1 LEGO car and unique LEGO figure are perfect. In all, the ~70 mailers set me back maybe $1,200 (including shipping). SO, I’d say they are well worth the time and investment. Thanks to Christina Ramsey (again) for helping me piece them all together. Hmmmmm, what will 2019 look like??
